Hermod simmers with agitation on the way to Club Toxic. The muscle in his jaw tics as his hands grip the steering wheel, and he snaps the stick shift as he drives.

My mind relives the evening’s events, from the disagreement between Hermod and Slash at Hermod’s house, to the tussle with the changeling in the tiger enclosure. When Hermod pulled me to him, I thought for sure he would kiss me, and I was desperate for him to do so. I want him taking my lips between his, sucking, teasing, and I wonder what it would feel like to have him bite my lips, my neck, as he makes love to me.

But other than the kiss we shared a couple of weeks ago, he has expressed zero sexual interest in me. His caveman routine tonight has me seriously confused. I decide to tell him how I feel.

“What’s got you so cranky?” I demand.

He drives on, ignoring me.

I shift in my seat, turning my body to face him. “Hey, you got what you wanted,” I say. “I’m here. What’s got you so annoyed?”

“I’m not annoyed,” he tells me, but I know better.

“Your accent gets stronger when you’re emotional,” I point out.

He squints at me, rolls his eyes, then trains his gaze back on the road. “I don’t have an accent.”

“I don’t haff an axsent,” I mimic, trying my best to sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I do not sound like that,” he grumbles.

I repeat the last sentence back to him, with the accent exaggerated. He glares. This man glares a lot.

“Also, why were you so mean to Slash?” I ask. “He helped us out.” I realize I’ve said us, not you.

“He could have got you killed,” Hermod says.

“He came to my rescue.”

He turns his head so very slowly, and glares at me again. “I came to your rescue.”

He is being silly. “You both came to my rescue,” I say.

“Is that what you call what he did?” he asks, raising his voice. “Slash let you get snatched by the changeling. If he had not been there, you would not have been taken into the tiger house.” He waves his hand, looking annoyed.

“You know, for someone who has no heartbeat, and therefore no blood circulation, you sure are worked up,” I tell him. “Why are you so angry?”

“Angry? I don’t get angry,” he says, seething. His thumbs drum the steering wheel in a fast rhythm.

I settle back in my seat, pondering this. Is there some reason why he’d prefer not to be angry, therefore, he ignores the fact that he is, in fact, angry? I side-eye him, contemplating what to say next.

“Do you… like Slash?” Hermod asks suddenly.

“Hm? Yeah, sure,” I say absently. “I like him just fine. He was able to find the changelings, right? That’s what we—you—wanted, isn’t it?”

Hermod, eyes still on the road, sighs.

“You know, you sigh a lot for someone who does not need to breathe,” I point out.

“Would you like to… go out with Slash?” he asks. The words come out slowly.
